You can dilly-dally too long and run out of time. They have the crowd, for starters, and while you might feel like you are not blending in very well at all when you first play the spy, your first turn at the sniper can be just as panic-inducing as the screen seems filled with attention-grabbing people none of whom seem to move the way you expect AI-controlled characters to move. The sniper, meanwhile, has other problems. Or they might find themselves low on time and check their watch to add a few seconds to the clock - and get plugged while they're at it. They might walk without the right kind of purpose. But beyond those tasks and others, they might just give themselves away by not behaving like an AI character. They might be spotted switching over a statue, for example, or bugging the ambassador, which involves getting close to the clearly signposted character in question and doing a certain hand gesture.

There are the missions that the spy must carry out, for example, each of which affords them ample opportunity to betray themselves. The sniper must scan the faces, the wash of moving bodies and fluttering hands, and work out which of the people they can see is controlled by the first human player and must therefore be killed.Įach role offers a handful of complications.

The spy must mingle with a crowd of AI characters and pull off a series of simple missions within a set amount of time. SpyParty requires just two players, one of whom plays the spy while the other plays a distant sniper trying to kill the spy. I have never played a game quite like this, and yet it is so simple. I played a morning's worth of matches if that, even so, I felt myself teetering on the very edge of terrifying depths, and so I fled. SpyParty, for me, is the sweetest torture imaginable. In truth, I found those pleasures astonishingly effective. I'm still losing like 95% of games, but it feels like I'm slowly improving, so there's that at least.Īll that said, Spy Party is really unique, and I'm really looking forward to being a part of the process as this moves toward a finished product.To say I bounced off SpyParty after a morning might make it sound like I did not enjoy myself, or that the game's many pleasures failed to have much effect on me. If you think you can persevere, though, the community, as everyone else has said, is incredibly nice, and the veterans I've played with so far have been infinitely patient with my noobiness and have been happy to point out the mistakes I've made and give me tips to improve.

So, if you're the sort of gamer who gets easily frustrated and gives up quickly if you don't pick something up right away, you might want to wait until handicapping and such is added in. Expect to lose, a lot, for awhile, unless you happen to catch another new player online to play with. Most of the people in the beta right now have been playing for awhile, and they're infinitely familiar with all of the newbie mistakes you'll inevitably make. Let me tell you up front - at the moment, the learning curve is steep. I got into the beta a couple weeks ago, and finally have had a chance to play it a few times this past week.
